Oh, the places you’ll go…
That classic Dr. Seuss line refers, of course, to all of the exciting challenges and journeys we take in life. But it’s all too easy to get caught up in the demands of daily existence. Yes, you’ve got carpools and soccer and meetings. And you probably made it to Disney and on a few family beach vacations. But true travel sometimes gets the short end of the stick.
Then comes retirement—and your world opens up like never before.
Best Places to Travel in 2019
Whether you want to travel internationally or stay closer to home (or both!) there’s plenty of adventure waiting for every kind of traveler. Here are six of our favorite trips to take in 2019.
New in Alberta
Alberta, Canada, is known for its top-notch skiing, but that’s not what landed it on Travel + Leisure’s list of the best places to travel in 2019. That distinction can be attributed largely to three new attractions: the architecturally impressive Calgary Central Library, Edmonton’s new Royal Alberta Museum, and the luxurious (and right by the Rockies) Kananaskis Nordic Spa, which boasts a collection of hydrotherapy pools, salt exfoliation cabins, and eucalyptus steam rooms.
Southern Charm in Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina, is as much for foodies these days as it is for history lovers. Check out the low country cuisine at Husk, the farm-to-table dishes at FIG, and contemporary cuisine at Magnolias.
The Blue Waters of Thailand
If you’ve never been, Thailand can be a daunting place to figure out on your own. Kensington Tours is one way to take the hassle out of your trip—and make sure you don’t miss anything. The company’s Thailand tours range from nine to 20 days and give you a look both the blissful and bustling sides of this magnificent country.
Letting Loose in Deadwood
Deadwood, South Dakota, brings the days of the Wild West back to life. You’ll see it in the buildings (including plenty of charming casinos and bars) along historic Main Street, as well as in the fun re-enactments that are done throughout town. But Deadwood is also a great base to explore the surrounding area, including Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and Badlands National Park.
On the Water in Iceland
With flights on the rise, it’s become almost common to hear that someone is heading to Reykjavik for a long weekend. That’s not what we’re talking about here. If you’re looking to see Iceland from every angle, check out this nine-day Silversea Reykjavik to Reykjavik cruise, which travels around the entire island, including a stop in Seydisfjordur, one of the country’s most picturesque towns.
100 Years in the Grand Canyon
The park celebrates its centennial in 2019, making this the ideal time to visit. There are a series of talks, concerts, and special exhibitions planned throughout the year, including Centennial Summerfest and Star Party at Grand Canyon National Park (June 22-29), a Celebration of Art at the Grand Canyon (Sept. 7-15), and a free day for Veterans (Nov. 11).
