From cabinets to electrical outlets, we think of everything when it comes to baby-proofing the inside of our homes. But have you ever thought about the outside?
We all know about the dangers of swimming pools and hot tubs, of course, but there’s a lot more to consider when trying to keep the great outdoors safe for little ones.
How to Child Proof Your Yard
Just like the inside of your home, you’ll want to consider everything from the perspective of a baby or toddler. Here are a few things to look out for in particular.
Beware of Chocking Hazards
Pea gravel might be a good choice for your drive, but it’s a choking hazard for the 3 and under crowd. The same goes for the shiny glass pieces you’ll find in some fire pits (use sand instead), as well as plants that produce berries, olives, and cherry tomatoes.
It might not be feasible to replace your driveway, but you’ll at least be cognizant that it’s an area to keep little explorers away from. Gardens, meanwhile, can be cordoned off with fencing.
Keep the Playset Safe
Especially if it’s older, examine your playset periodically to make sure it doesn’t wobble. Check for rusting or protruding bolts. Also take a look at what’s underneath your playset. Mulch or rubber tiles are safer than hard ground.
Watch out for Trampolines
If your older children have a trampoline, be aware that it can be a very unsafe place for toddlers. All trampolines should have nets on the side. But it’s even more important to make sure that, if you’re going to allow your toddler on the trampoline, there are no other children on the structure at the same time—which is when most injuries occur, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Remember that Kids Eat Everything
In addition to the previously discussed choking risk, be aware of the many things in your back yard that may be poisonous. An obvious first step is to check your yard, especially after a big rain, for any mushrooms that may be growing and remove them. There are also common plants, such as wisteria, that can be toxic to children.
Prevent Access to Garages and Sheds
These places are chock full of dangers, from gardening shears to gasoline. Make sure your small child can’t get in. While you’re at it, periodically test your garage’s sensors to make sure it stops automatically when someone is underneath it.
Keep Your Grass Safe
Think of your baby crawling across the back yard. Now think of what you put on your grass to keep it weed-free and green. Keep your little ones off the grass for a while after you apply these chemicals or, better yet, find non-toxic alternatives.
The True Baby-Proof Back Yard
If you’re a parent already, you know how quickly an accident can happen, which is why there is no back yard that is truly safe for a baby or toddler unless an adult is there. But these steps will definitely make your yard safer for your child, as well as any little visitors you might have.
