American Red Cross Fosters Local Heroes
The world needs heroes. No, not more caped vigilantes or masked warriors, but ordinary people who act selflessly in the face of extraordinary circumstances. The American Red Cross fosters such heroes by recognizing members of the community who act selflessly with courage or extreme kindness.

American Red Cross has a history of Heroes
Founded by Clara Barton, the American Red Cross introduced first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs prior to World War One. With the outbreak of the Great War, the organization saw exponential growth, increasing from a mere 107 local chapters in 1914 to 3,864 in 1918. Membership grew from 17,000 to over 20 million adults and 11 million Junior Red Cross members. In WWII the American Red Cross enrolled more than 104,000 nurses for military service and prepared 27 million packages for American and Allied prisoners of war, as well as shipping over 300,000 tons of supplies overseas. They also initiated a national blood program that collected over 13 million pints of blood for use by the armed forces. Today, the American Red Cross is instrumental in providing aid and blood services to American armed forces and their families, as well as providing disaster relief in the U.S. and around the world.
