If you’re not sure whether it’s time to downsize or not, here’s one easy question to ask yourself: is your home more of a joy or a hassle?
Before we get into that, let’s take a look at the language we’re using. More and more, people are using the phrase “right size” instead of “downsize.” That’s because a bigger house isn’t necessarily a better house.
The question is, what’s the right house for you?
Is Your House a Burden?
Some people love cutting the grass, cleaning the gutters, washing the floors, and dusting. The rest of us would rather be golfing or playing with the grandkids.
Then there’s the question of money. The bigger the house, the more you spend on it. For those of us who don’t have a money tree growing in the back yard, that can be an issue.
Are you spending money on a new roof or paying taxes that you’d rather be spending on a river cruise through Europe?
Do You Still Need a Big Home?
If all of your kids live out of town and you find that you’re hosting overnight guests once a month, that could be a reason to stay in your current home.
Or maybe you love to entertain and your current house is perfect for hosting large gatherings.
As long as it’s not taking away from something else that you’d rather do more (river cruise!), then you know your house is still more of a joy than a hassle.
But I Raised My Kids Here!
Look, we get it. You remember bringing Jenny home from the hospital. You can picture Timmy on his first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday. You took prom photos is this very back yard.
How can you leave all of that?
It is hard, but you have to force yourself to remember that you are not leaving those memories. You are just leaving the place where they were formed.
Tomorrow is a chance to make new memories, in a place that, at this point in your life, can bring you more joy and more good times.
