We’ve all heard about spring cleaning. It’s that time of year when we fling open the windows and get to work freshening everything up.
But what’s the deal with fall cleaning?
While it’s not clear when and how it started, we do know that Martha Stewart is a fan. She describes fall cleaning as “getting ready for a long winter’s nap.”
Here’s a somewhat more practical description of what you’ll want to get done this time of year—both inside and out.
Fall Cleaning Checklist
• Get rid of the last of summer’s dirt and dust by cleaning walls, floors, baseboards, etc.
• Your ceiling fans have been busy. Here’s a trick: Use an old pillowcase to clean fan blades without making a mess.
• Clean your carpets.
• Use your vacuum attachment to clean couches, upholstered chairs, lampshades, and blinds.
• Hire a chimney sweep to get your fireplace ready for action.
• Winterize your yard by clearing out leaves, putting away planters, shutting down your outdoor faucet, and planting spring bulbs.
• Cover or store outdoor furniture.
• Clean and organize your garage; you’ll want the extra space for parking once the weather turns cold.
• Change your furnace filter.
• Wash windows and clean and store screens.
• Wash door knobs and light switches.
• If you’re really organized, swap summer bedding, window treatments, and throw pillows for cozier winter versions.
Cleaning, Clutter, and StorageMart
The thing about cleaning is that it can’t solve an underlying clutter problem. If you find yourself cramped for space, the first step is to sell, donate, or discard what you don’t need. If you still have too much stuff, then it might be time to consider renting a clean and affordable self storage unit.
At StorageMart, you can rent a unit as small as 25 square feet or so—or up to the size of a garage. Our self storage units can be rented on a month-by-month basis and are always clean and well lit. Need more info? Check out our storage unit guide or rent a unit online today.
