Rafting in Canada—the Six Best Trips
Canada offers thousands of acres of unspoiled wilderness. And white-water rafting offers an amazing opportunity to see things that land-lovers can’t. Here are a half dozen of our favorite trips.
Banff National Park
There are four different rivers to explore in Banff, with something to offer for both beginners and experienced rafters. What they have in common? Incredible views of the Canadian Rockies.
Alsek and Tatshenshini Rivers
This 11-day trip offers some of the most extraordinary scenery in the world. The journey travels along the border between Canada and Alaska, providing views of icebergs, mountains, wildlife, and more.
Slave River
This river runs through the Northwest Territories, offering four sets of rapids in the 25-kilometer stretch, between Fort Smith and Fort Fitzgerald. These rapids are considered to be some of the best in the world. They’re also home to Canada’s northernmost colony of pelicans, which are a protected species.
The Fraser River
This trip takes you to the heart of British Columbia, offering views of both Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and Rearguard Falls. In late summer, you’ll also see the spawning Chinook Salmon.
The Shubenacadie River
This Nova Scotia river starts out a bit dull and muddy, but it gets much more interesting soon. This is one of the few places in Canada where you can tidal bore raft, experiencing waves of up to 16 feet.
Magpie River
This 8-day trip, accessible only by a float plan, takes you into the remote forests of Quebec. You’ll spend your nights on river islands, where you can take in the aurora borealis.
